African American Children’s Books and How You Can Find Them

African American Children’s books may not always be easy to locate unless you search extensively on the internet or you shop specifically at a Black bookstore.

This may or may not be convenient for some people as there may not be a specialty Black book store in your immediate area.  I did some research and found several great online bookstores where you can find African American children’s books. They are:

Black Books Galore

The Book Club House

Black Book Plus

Just Us Books (which is also a publishing company)

They all seem to have a large selection of African American children’s books.

Amazon is the largest online book seller right now and you can find many African American children’s books here as well.  However, you will have to do a specific search for the criteria you are looking for.  You will want to key in specific search words such as “African American children’s books” or “black children’s books” to locate these selections.  Since you are searching specifically for African American children’s books, Amazon will automatically suggest other books relative to this category.

The same goes for Barnes & Noble and other large bookstores that offer online shopping.  AALBC is a site that is specifically dedicated to black author’s books.  You can type in African American Kids under book search, and hundreds of titles will come up.  If you order the books from here, it links you back to the Amazon web site which is where you will pay for the books.  This is a good one stop shop because they also carry titles of African American authors for adult stories as well.

There are also book clubs that you can join such as Black Expressions, Children’s Book of the Month club, and several others that have many African American children’s book selections to choose from.  You can join their club very conveniently by signing up online. When you sign up with these clubs, you will have to agree to their terms and you will have access to all of the books that they carry.  Don’t forget about your local African American independent black bookstores, which cater to these sorts of book selections as well.

I am always on a search to find children’s picture books that feature multicultural main characters.  To me, African American children’s books are important because they offer kids the opportunity to read about characters that actually look like and are representative of them. This alone can really help to boosts their self images and also increase their love of reading.   It also helps to create tolerance and understanding in little one’s of all cultures starting at a very early age.

There are definitely African American children’s books out there, but they all could stand to receive much more exposure than what they currently do.  Noticing this trend in children’s picture books, I was inspired to write a series of books for kids with a brown character named Sunny.  This is a new children’s mystery book which can now be enjoyed by kids everywhere.

Sunny’s Adventures could be classified as a beginner mystery book for kids!  The star of Sunny’s Adventures is of course Sunny, an 8 year old little girl full of curiosity.  Sunny, clever and determined, acts as a junior detective in her quest to solve five different fun mysteries.  This wonderful children’s picture book will surely take your child on a fun AND educational adventure.

It will make them want to be a part of the action and help Sunny solve the various cases she comes across.  At the end of each chapter, they’ll get to be interactive with her as they go over all of the clues that helped to solve the mysteries.   Sunny’s favorite expression “I’m on the case”, becomes the staple for the beginning of each mystery she embarks upon and solves successfully.  Your kids will be able to journey with Sunny and feel powerful as they use their minds to figure out the different mysteries.

Also, make sure your child logs onto the Sunny’s Adventures web-site to receive free coloring book pages, a yummy lemon cake recipe, fan club ideas, a fun quiz, free bookmarks, and a chance to win some great prizes in the Kids Coloring Contest.
