Children’s Books Add Excitement for the Whole Family

Children’s books are something that will benefit the whole entire family when introduced to your young readers early on.  Children’s books offer a wonderful source of entertainment that enriches your child’s minds and their lives forever.  Strong basic literacy skills will never be an issue for them as they move on from reading children’s books to adult topic books.

As parents, there are several things that can be done to create a fun filled journey through the adventures of reading children’s books. There are a slew of kid’s books like Sunny’s Adventures, a children’s mystery book and thousands of others that offer fun filled stories that your children can enjoy on an interactive level.

Sunny’s Adventures allows your child to actually help the main character Sunny solve several junior detective cases.  Children’s books that offer mystery, excitement, adventure, and fun information are sure to be winners with kids and help to increase their love of reading.

One way that parents can get children interactive in the book reading process is to start a Children’s book reading group for your child.  This is a sure fire way to show kids the true value of books and how they can include them in their lives as a fun filled activity. There’s several other fun ideas as well – please see below:

Fun Activities to help in the Reading Enjoyment of Children’s Books

  • Start a children’s book club that meets once a month or once a quarter may be more manageable. It really just depends on whatever your schedule will allow for since as parents, you will be helping to facilitate the event. You can suggest having it at a different parent’s home for each meeting to lesson the load of planning the event all the time. For more great ideas about this, subscribe to the free newsletter at Sunnysadventures.com. Al Roker from the Today show also started a children’s book club. You can view more about it at today.msnbc.msn.com and type in “Al Roker’s book club” in the search field.
  • Offer children’s books as a treat instead of sugary sweets or a toy when you want to reward your child.  The idea is to associate reading with fun so it becomes a habit for them to look forward to their next book.
  • Have a story time every night. Reading children’s books right before bed really does calm them down and prepares them for a night of restful sleep and sweet dreams.
  • Take them on a trip to the library or bookstore to meet one of their favorite authors of a children’s book that they really enjoyed. Check out the local advertisements for any author visits occurring as the library and bookstores always let you know well in advance when they are having these sorts of visits.
  • Create a theme each month and check out children’s books from the library that cover that specific theme. Our local library allows you to check out 30 free books all at one time so for example, around Christmas, my daughter likes to check out just Christmas books. You can do the same for other holidays as well such as Kwanza, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Valentine’s Day, Easter, etc. This will all add to the excitement of the holiday or event that you’re celebrating as a family. You can also choose historical themes, adventure, animal themes, etc.

Once you’ve established their own little reading community and sources of entertainment highlighting children’s books, reading will become second nature to your kids.  Keep a watch out for relative information around children’s books such as Children’s Book Week which takes place in the month of May each year (just recently changed from November).  This is a great time to celebrate reading with your young ones, find out about book events, and have your children go to one or two book readings by authors

Another good idea is to discover what your child naturally loves to do and get books pertaining to those subjects.  Do you have a little chef on your hands?  A natural born artist who can give Picasso a run for his money?  A little scientist that likes experiments perhaps?  Then by all means, encourage them by buying children’s books that relate to those fields of interests.  When this happens, you’ve then opened up their minds to a whole other world out there that is guaranteed to stay with them forever.

You can find great children’s books and obtain the best priced deals from various sources. Whether its timeless classics, modern fiction, or newer kids books, all of the below suggestions are good places to start.

Where You Can Find the Best Priced Children’s Books:

  • The library (a free source) – you can check out children’s books in a large quantity. Friends of the Library, a volunteer group, also sells used books at very discounted rates (check with your local library)
  • New and used bookstores always have book sales. Check out those tables which are located by the main front entrance of their doors as this is usually where you can find many books on sale
  • Online book sellers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and independent book stores provide competitive prices as well. You can comparison shop in the convenience of your own home on your own time schedule
  • Garage sales, and swap meets can obviously provide the best savings for children’s books. While you search for antiques and your own unique finds, your children can search for fun books that peak their interest. Arrive early in the morning to get the best choice picks.
  • Open a book club membership for your child with Children’s Book of the Month club, Black Expressions, Highlights, Scholastic, or one of many others. You can arrange to have a book shipped to your child once a month or as often as you’d like.
