I remember when I was younger reading Nancy Drew mysteries and not being able to put the book down until the mystery had been solved. I guess I never really got over wanting to read or watch a good mystery on TV, as I am now an adult and an avid fan of Murder She Wrote re-runs, Columbo, Perry Mason, and a host of other detective shows – very fascinating stuff I must say.
Children’s Mystery books today can have that same kind of fascination for kids. Solving mysteries, figuring out clues, and working out solutions to problems are all very thought provoking activities. Sunny’s Adventures, a children’s mystery book, is a beginner mystery series for young readers. This book really help’s to show the fun in solving puzzling situations just by thinking.
Children’s mystery books like these have a real added value for children that can be carried all the way into adulthood. They stretch the thinking muscles beyond just what they see. These sorts of kid’s books really challenge them to think about how to solve problems, big or small. You can’t put a price tag on an added value like that.
You can even create an environment at home that is just like the children’s mystery books. You can help children feel that their opinions do matter even for instances where you don’t really need their help. You can create a fun, simple mystery that requires a helping hand from them. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
As a matter of fact, it can be something as simple as helping you to find your missing car keys. You could say something out loud such as “I remember using my keys to unlock the door two hours ago and then I walked into this very room right after that.” Encourage them to go through the thought process with you and solicit their feedback as to what could have happened to whatever it is you’re trying to find. They will be so excited that you’re asking for their input and will most likely find it fun to help you trace your steps to find what’s missing. Kids love being as smart as their parents and this opens the door wide open for them to flex their mental muscles. They could even use their minds to actually help you figure something out. Imagine that!
